This is darker version of the Mushroom Kingdom. A monster called Bōwser has eaten the whole royal family and it is up to the Mariō Brōthers to make sure it can not hurt anyone again.
Bōwser has gathered an army of monsters to help him take over the Mushroom Kingdom and turn it into something from a nightmare.
